To help you understand our dream, here is a bit of background information about us. Jake’s Sensory World is the idea of Jo Hall and Ruth Garrett, both mums to two young children. Jo and Ruth met through a mother and toddler group when their children, Jake and Kady, were small babies. As the children grew it became clear that Jake was developing at a different pace and unfortunately at the age of 12 months it was confirmed that Jake had a rare neuro transmitter disease, which has now left him with severe complex health needs.
The last few years have been a trying, and at times, isolating experience for Jo, her husband Tim and older child Lois. They have constantly struggled to find activities that suit their whole family. Friends and family have regularly had to travel many miles to be part of Jake’s birthday celebrations over the years. Trips to sensory play centres in Macclesfield and So the idea was founded and a steering group formed to look into setting up a sensory play centre in Sefton. Jake’s Sensory World will provide a much needed play centre, fully accessible by all. Each of our rooms will be kitted out with ceiling tracking, the toilets will be fully adapted and the changing facilities will be designed in line with the "Changing Places Campaign" (see our links page). The centre will contain a light room, dark room and soft play room, with an extra area which can be used for parties (or as a meeting room). A chill out zone will provide families with a relaxing area to socialise, along with refreshment facilities for everyone to enjoy. We have previously been successful in our outline bid for the Lottery Playful Ideas and although this eventually failed our first succesful funding is now in place through Baily Thomas Foundation. More can be read about this in our ‘Latest News’ section. Jake’s Sensory World is now a registered company and also a registered charity. It is our dream to make Jake’s Sensory World a reality but we need people to want this as much as we do.
